The First page Of Google

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Often Google is referred to as online real estate, their homepage being deemed as the most valuable in the world. The same reasoning works well with each individual search term, with the first page of Google being the most lucrative peace of online real estate you can own. Unlike the real world of property through where just about all property has a value, only a few websites actually have any online real estate value. This is because there are only 10 places on the first page of Google and once you get past the third of fourth page, there is almost no value at all. In fact if you are position 50 for a search term, then you might as well be position 450.

There are many sets of stats out there, but a sample is that only 18% of people will venture to the second page of a search and only 5% will venture to the third page. In terms of business return, if you are not on the first page of Google for the correct search terms, your return from your online investment will be small if anything at all.

We mention Google in this scenario, based on the fact that it pretty much dominates the UK search results, with over 90% of all searches going through the big G. Bing, Yahoo and Ask make up the rest, with other offerings not even touching and results scale. The massage has to clear, there are no half measures with online marketing or search engine optimisation, you just have to be on the first page of Google.

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

We were disappointed that we did not make Vegas last year at SEO  Pub Con seminar run by webmaster world. But this year is different and on the 8th November we get on the flight to go to Vegas. This is the biggest show on earth when it comes to internet marketing and everyone who is anyone will be there. The seminar covers everything from social marketing right up to the latest in search engine optimisation techniques with only respected qualified individuals doing the talks.

It lasts for 3 days, but it is the networking meeting where FOK marketing will be focusing on contacts to obtain quality web links and services. Some may think there are other reasons to go and I am sure some will take advantage of what Vegas offers, but there is no doubt that results is wahta we are all about, so it will be work first and pleasure second.

Google Caffeine All Ended August

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

Of all the Google updates this has been the longest, although this was not really an algorithm change it was a complete rewrite of the search indexing system Google uses to deliver results. They now claim results will be 50% fresher and much quicker than before. The shear size of the net and where it is going has meant that even Google needed to upgrade and have in place as search index that could deliver accurate results quicker, to improve the user experience. So last year it was announced that Google Caffeine would be the replacement, but with hints of Christmas then Easter, it ended up bearing a full year of development, before Google has officially announced the upgrade is completed.

For the search professional it has been a year of mixed opinions and results. For many the implementation has shown no change and rankings have remained constant throughout, but for a small proportion of webmasters certain algorithm changes have been a nightmare to overcome. There are certain areas that have become more sensitive, especially relating to IP addresses and links from the same server.

It is astonishing how much information Google can handle in any one second, if a web page was a paper page of information stacked on top of each other, Google  would process 3 miles of paper each second. The job of any seo company is not to find ways around Google for a quick win. but to work within Google’s guidelines that benefit the user, so speed is not a ctical factor on the new algorithm
